FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership and Greater Jackson Alliance announced earlier in 2012 that the region was awarded a $5 million MCOT Technical Skills Training Grant by the U.S. Department of Labor. The grant is funded from the user fees paid by employers to bring foreign workers into the United States under the H-1B non-immigrant visa program. The workforce initiative, named the Mississippi Careers of Tomorrow (MCOT) project, is designed to address current workforce skill gaps so that substantial numbers of skilled, MCOT level jobs can be added to the regional economy and hundreds of unemployed or underemployed individuals can be placed in higher level occupations.

The MCOT project will be administered and overseen by the Southcentral Mississippi Works Local Workforce Area, the workforce division of the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District (CMPDD), who will in turn subcontract with the Mississippi Department of Employment Security to determine trainee eligibility and enter into agreements with employers to provide the on-the-job (OJT) training. Hinds Community College, Holmes Community College, Copiah-Lincoln Community College, and Southwest Mississippi Community College serve as MCOT educational partners and will provide an invaluable connection to the future workforce pool and to provide any necessary pre- and post-employment training to participants.

The OJT training available under the grant is not limited to any specific industry or employment sized company, but rather to the highly technical information technology and advanced manufacturing/engineering occupations that are common place in today’s manufacturing and service industries.  Only private-for profit sector employers who utilize the targeted occupations may participate in this project; no trainees may be placed with public sector employers..  Any employer who meets the criteria and needs to fill the targeted occupations has the ability to access these OJT training funds.

The Greater Jackson Partnership and the Southcentral Mississippi Works Local Workforce Area have developed a handbook detailing which occupations are eligible to access the funds and all eligibility requirements for the employers and trainees.  All interested employers should contact the Partnership at (601)-948-7575 or the Greater Jackson Alliance at (601)-948-3111 and they will be sent the handbook in hard or digital copy format.  Individuals interested in OJT training under the project should contact Mr. Terry Hodges, CMPDD MCOT Project Manager at 601-321-5443.
